Hi Carved!

Sent two files, but my mail-client said something went wrong. Did you get them?

Hi,

No I didn't get your mail. Adam also sent me the files, I just checked them out and wanted to write you a message letting you know that I don't need them anymore. But as you saved them, try sending them again as it wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Thank you for your help!

I am having the same issue - the driver is not active because it is not signed.

It is not even giving me an option to use it. When will this be fixed?

Can you post the driver file set and see if installing it manually will give the option to use it.

I am so sorry for this. I honestly don't know whats the cause of this. I personally don't get the error and many others like me don't. The driver is working fine for me in Win7 x64, but the fact that it doesn't work for some of you is indeed a problem.
I am beginning to think that Asus did something to the new installers to prevent the driver from installing on multiple Xonar models. But just like all Asus work, this doesn't always work.

I am planning to do some various driver builds and send them to you guys that have problems and see if and which one fixes the problem.

Is C-Media Panel better than with GX enabled? I still don't quite understand what GX is exactly. Perhaps it's something I don't utilize.

Are you using 5.1 sound system? if yes, then you will need GX to emulate EAX with games that does have support for this technology. Without using GX you can-t get 5.1 output, only stereo sound in games.

I just want to add that only some games have support for EAX. Most games use direct sound and this works without problems with 5.1 positioning and in this case you don't need to enable GX.

It would be really NICE and FAIR if you could give proper credits to Daniel_K for releasing/leaking those so waited WHQL drivers.

Nobody knowns where did he get them from and how, but I'm thankful for that.

Yes you are absolutely RIGHT. :p
Thanks for pointing this out.

later edit.
Finally figured out from where he got the drivers. Its from Windows Update Catalog. I too did many searches in it in the past months, searching for new signed drivers, but wasn't that lucky at that time.

Just installed latest version. Win7 x64 here, no errors.

Driver on Device manager still mentions version 1792 though...

Other than that all works good.

Hi Carved,
There's an error on the date for the 1793 drivers showing 2010 instead of 2011. Besides this, do you think that the WHQL 1793 drivers will appear on the asus website/ftp as well? In other words, are these drivers going to be an official release?

Thanks

• CarvedInside31 Jan 2011 @ 19:33

Well the specific driver files where build in 28 October 2010, anyway I didn't updated the information files where the date and version is and thats why it shows 1792.
I don't think this drivers will appear on asus website. Thats because the already have newer drivers from C-Media, and most probably would have put them by now as they are pretty old. They where sent to Microsoft so they could check them and approve them (WHQL Testing). These are the first xonar drivers that where Whql approved, so I think they are ok.

I meant this: 30.01.2010 : UNi Xonar 1792-1793 1.28 drivers released. 😉

I'm using atm UNi 1792 1.27, do you think I should install the new version on my Essence ST?

Thanks 🙂

I suppose that you are using Windows XP, but using Vista or W7 (like me) you will need GX to emulate this, even with most recent games, like Mass Effect 2 or LEGO Harry Potter. So my bet is trial and error, i start the game without GX and if it doesn't output 5.1 then i activate GX and tried again. I don't know any game in W7 working in 5.1 with GX disabled and using DDL (optical out).

I use Win7 x64 and I haven't experienced this issue. If I set 5.1 in windows speaker configuration, and 5.1 as the output in Xonar control panel, I get 5.1 in games where their sound engine supports it.

On another note, does GX mode finally work without crashing the system with the new WHQL's drivers? Part of the reason I bought this card was to have hassle-free alternative to ALchemy.

This driver most likely doesn't contain improvements to the GX mode, GX responsible files weren't a part of the original WHQL drivers.

GX was improved over the years but still sucks.

In foobar, remove ASIO Xonar device from ASIO virtual devices and install it again. If this doesn't work you may have to manually delete Foobar settings from Documents and Settings(XP) or Users (Vista/7). Easy way to find it is by using search on you OS disk and deleting any Foobar folder.

when i install the driver no card is found no control panel appears and the window selection freaks out where I can only type for like 1 second before it blinks and cant do anything. Uninstalling uni and reinstalling the 1792 asus driver fixed all problems.

Installed the driver successfully, but it was troublesome. Windows (7 x64, using DDLive) would not shut down properly. It would show the Explorer process as "playing shutdown sound", and if I forced quit it would stay in the "Shutting Down" screen forever.

More over, the computer would randomly freeze. No BSOD, no nothing, just freeze.

Unistalled the driver, rebooted on safe mode, cleaned up everything, tried to reinstall the driver, device manager showed and error, "can find valid signature bla bla bla".

Uninstalled the driver, cleanup in safe mode, removed signature enforcement, tried to reinstall the driver, the installer took forever and beyond and never finished, had to abort installation.

Now when I try to install the drivers (either Unified or ASUS) it keeps asking me to insert the card.

I've googled it and found the EEPROM issues. Is not that, hardware ID is correct. Tried the restoree program but corroborates it, finds valid ID and nothing to change.

At the moment the only drivers I can use are 1777 (ASUS)

Despite the card being detected, drivers loaded and working the installer keeps asking me to insert the card.

I've powered off, removed the card, plugged it again, powered on... same issue.

Any suggestions?

Re above post:

I made a mismatch with the 1777 and 1792 (ASUS) and driver installed this time.

Basically I used the installer files of 1777 and the driver/apps/libraries of 1792, killed the signature files of the driver, and 1792 "mutant" went through.

Then I used 1792 ASUS "untouched" and it went smoothly.

Next step: another shot to Unified 1.28. The latency on 1792 ASUS using DDLive does my head in.

Still, can't believe one has to go through all this aggro to have a half-operational sound card.

And that was me moving from an Auzentech Prelude to the Xonar ST because the Creative drivers on Win7 x64 were troublesome. Heh.

Wish all the big review sites that gave top marks to this card would mention that although it's brilliant hardware the driver implementation is less than stellar and one spends more time researching how to make the hardware work than actually using it...

Many thanks for keeping this project alive tho... There's still a glimmer of hope, compared to the hopelenessness of waiting for ASUS to release an official driver that does away with all these headaches.

I think something is wrong on your side, as people can install untouched 1792 drivers without problems. And as Con says a clean install of Win7 would most likely fix the installation problems you've been having.
If you managed to install Uni Drivers and want to uses DDLive, I suggest you go for C-Media Audio Panel.

Regarding review sites, my thoughts exactly, you are perfectly right. They don't cover the driver implementation enough, and even if they mention some issues they say it will probably be fix in a newer version. Guess what, after months or even years those issues are still there. So they have a part of blame to the situation we are in, if they would criticize the driver implementation, the soundcards makers will have to fix those, as less people would buy their products if they read and are aware of those sound cards have driver issues.

During my past conversations with robscix (soundcard reviewer for Guru3d, former reviewer for hardwarecanucks) I pointed out to him the same thing :
" I think you should criticize Asus driver & support in your next reviews , what good is a extraordinary sound card if the software is bad? "

Yeah, there's definitely something wrong...

As con and you suggested I'm gonna do a clean install, but without the Xonar.

I need to determine whether the recent instability of my rig is due to the card or there's some other underlying issue.

My money is in the card, because before, with the Prelude, I didn't have any stability issues whatsoever, even after leaving Intel BurnTest running for 48 hours solid, but you never know...

Still, thanks again for your efforts and your input 🙂
