Hi Carved. First of all, thank you for your great work !

I have actually one question, i would like to know if a workaround exists for a 3.0 analog output configuration (two fronts and one center).
Indeed, the closest config available in the audio center is 5.1 but i don't know if it is possible to downmix rear and sub channels.

    Thank you for your help.

      Hi.
Tricky stuff. Supposing that you want for Center speaker to be recognized as it would be in a 5.1 speaker which plays 5.1 content. I guess the only way to do this would be to set 5.1 speakers and 6 channels and change "custom mapping channels" options in specific applications that support them and from there restrict the setup to 2 channels and center, I think you may have to redirect rear channels to front ones. For example in Media Player Classic Home Cinema you can do this (Preferences->Audio Switcher-> Enable Custom channel mappings).

On the other hand if you wish to play through Center a mix of left and right channels then you can set 5.1 speakers and 2 channels with stereo upmix enabled in the UNi Xonar installer.

Of course you could change between these to depending on the type of audio applications you use.

Hope this is of some help to you and please let me know if it is.:)

Hello CarvedInside and thank you for all your work.I have a Xonar D1 and I'm using your drivers. Can you please tell me if there is any way to change the Microphone boost from just a ON/OFF switch to maybe a 3 levels Boost (+ 10-20-30 dB) ? It would help me a lot because I get a humming sound/noise when going in full screen games, I guess it's related to VGA high load or something like that..but the fact is the noise goes away when I switch off the boost option. Thank you for your time.

      Hi,
There is no way to have different microphone boost settings. Maybe you should try to activate boost and lower the mic volume.
Probably you card pics some interferences from other components. Anyway check your microphone with the onboard card, and if you've connected the microphone to front panel then connect it to the card instead.

Hello Carved. First, a huge thanks for all your hard work; I did not know about upmixing stereo to 5.1 until I came across your website. I have removed my previous driver, and now gladly using yours.

I know you must be a busy person, but I would like to ask for your help, since I cannot seem to output true 5.1 sound to my speakers.

I have a Xonar DGX 5.1, and I could use two output methods. 1) A 3.5mm jack, and 2) an optical cable through the S/PDIF. Both methods go to a Samsung HTIB (home theater in a box), which have been performing 5.1/Dolby/DTS nicely for my Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles. The upmixing for the 3.5mm jack/stereo seems to work well. It's with the optical and 5.1 output that I am having trouble. When I open my playback devices, right click on S/PDIF, and test the "DTS Audio" and "Dolby Digital" under the Supported Formats tab, the sound plays correctly for the all 5 speakers (FL, FR, center, RL, RR).

    Reference image here: http://i45.tinypic.com/10zrfd2.png

However, if I play the Dolby Digital sound test file found here: http://www.lynnepublishing.com/surround/www_lynne... ...the sound for RL and RR comes out of FL and FR respectively. Nothing comes out of the rear speakers. What gives?

I have also noticed in my PC games that dialogue doesn't come out of the rear speakers. For example, in Borderlands 2. When I talk to an NPC, and turn my left or right to the NPC, the corresponding side (left or right) sounds correctly in the FL and FR speakers. However, when I turn my back on the NPC, the sound should come out of the rear speakers, right? But there isn't any sound. All I can hear from the rear speakers are ambient noise (music and general environment sounds). Again, what gives?

In case you're wondering, here are the Xonar Audio Center settings I'm using: http://i46.tinypic.com/1zlwrie.png

What can I do to output 5.1/surround sound correctly to my speakers using optical through S/PDIF?

Many thanks in advance. I look forward to hearing from you!

    Best regards,
    Richard

In the Xonar Audio Center, click "PCM" and change it to Dolby Digital Live or whatever.

      Notes:
      - Audio Channel sets the number of input channels that will be processed.
      - Analog Out sets the number of analog outputs that will be used. Any difference between this setting and the Audio Channel setting will generally be rectified with upmixing/downmixing of some kind.
      - SPDIF Out sets the encoding used for digital output, with PCM being stereo and others being 5.1 (I think). If anything other than PCM is selected, Analog Out may be disabled. Any difference between this setting and the Audio Channel setting will generally be rectified with upmixing/downmixing of some kind.
      - The Windows audio stack in Vista and newer does not notify sound drivers of how many channels applications intend to output. The Audio Channel setting is therefore critically important for enabling upmixing/decoding options on >2.0 speaker systems if you desire them (unless your speaker system is capable of doing this for you).
      - Xonar cards are capable of performing 2.0->5.1 Dolby Pro-Logic IIx surround decoding of stereo sources if you set Audio Channel to 2 and are using an Analog or SPDIF Out setting that is capable of 5.1.
      - Set Audio Channel to 6 when playing games in a 5.1 output mode.
      - Keep GX/Xear3D disabled when not playing a pre-Vista game that has EAX support. If you don't do this, you will experience instability.
      - The Xonar is not capable of downmixing a 6-channel input into a Dolby Pro-Logic surround-encoded stereo output, so you'll need to route either 5.1 encoded SPDIF or 6 analog channels to your speakers.

Once you get all this sorted out, test for the dialogue-in-rear-speakers issue again. It should be fixed. Also, don't forget to use the SPDIF input on your speakers.

Thank you so much for the detailed help hunterz. I learned new stuff from the notes you mentioned. I think I know now why the output on my optical cable or S/PDIF output isn't true 5.1/surround. I checked again, clicked on PCM under the S/PDIF Output in the Xonar Audio Center, and found out there isn't any other option; only PCM.

Is there anything I could do, like install an additional driver or configure something on my computer's end for the S/PDIF output to include Dolby Digital Live? Or as you've suggested, is my only option to change the audio channel to "2" (as opposed to "6"), thereby allowing Xonar to upmix the 2.0 signal to Dolby Pro-Logic II?

Did a bit of Googling, and I came across this: http://www.dolby.com/us/en/consumer/technology/ho...

"Transforms all PC audio signals into a Dolby Digital signal". In the meantime, I will try to find a means to have Dolby Digital Live on my PC; Perhaps it will appear on the S/PDIF output.

        Thank you very much.

I found that, with speakers set to 5.1 channels, games tended to see my speaker setup as "unknown". The solution was to instead tell Windows I have a 7.1-channel setup, with the surround-back channels missing.

(Oddly, when trying Windows 8 under VMWare just for the heck of it, the virtual HD Audio card actually had TWO options for 5.1 speaker placement: one with side speakers, and one with rear speakers. I wonder if Asus is exposing one, and games expect the other...)

Also, consider your reasons for wanting to use the SPDIF output -- at least on my Xonar DX, the analog outputs are amazing. (I don't have digital speakers to compare, though.)

I've never seen that 5.1 issue. I run all games in 6 channel mode, with 5.1 analog output (and have used DDL in the past).

I did switch myself from DDL to analog 5.1 a while back, on the advice of people here, although I honestly can't tell the difference (between my crappy ears and apparently out-of-vogue Z-5500d speakers). I was concerned about latency, too, as it surely takes some time to encode to AC3, and the voices in Fallout 3 were already badly out-of-sync due to the game engine.

The problem with analog is that the cables are susceptible to RFI, as well as bad contact with the devices at either end. The latter really drives me nuts sometimes, as I occasionally lose a channel and have to wiggle the connectors to restore the connection.

Alright, I went back to this because I couldn't find a free installer for Dolby Digital Live, and apparently, I need a Creative-based sound card for that. I changed the audio channel to 2, and indeed, the output is in Dolby 5.1! All videos I have sound nicely and correctly.

As for games, it isn't perfect; Sound is barely transferred to the rear speakers. My dilemma here is that the process thinks my rear speakers are side speakers. I only hear voices coming out of RL and RR when I turn my character sideways against the talking NPC. But the biggest change here is that dialogue still comes out of the center speaker. Before, when then analog channel was set to 6, and when I turn sideways or my back against the NPC, the sound cuts off or disappears from the center speaker.

So overall, even without Dolby Digital Live, my speakers seem nicely setup. Thank you very much for the solution! 🙂

    Warm regards.

Ouch, I didn't realize that the DGX can't do Dolby Digital Live (AC3) or DTS Connect (DTS) for 5.1 over SPDIF. If your speakers don't have the option of using 6 channel analog input, then you ought to consider taking the Xonar DGX back to where you purchased it and exchanging it for a more capable model.

I've been Googling a bit, and apparently, it's a known shortcoming of the card, that it only outputs 2.0 PCM through S/PDIF. My speaker doesn't support 6 channel analog input, as the only input methods are HDMI (it's also a DVD player, but lens is busted already), optical and RCA; The HTIB is pretty old, I've had it for quite a few years already.

Thanks for the concern, but for now I am ok with the card, since I bought it dirt cheap from someone who used it for just a month. I'm going to stick with it until I find a better card that actually supports DDL or DTSC out of the box.

I am just wondering if there's any possibility of installing DDL or DTSC on my system, so that the sound coming out of the S/PDIF output would be automatically converted. I don't think it's impossible, since the Creative sound cards need those installers which means their hardware does not natively support DDL or DTSC - which is just the same as Xonar cards. Unless of course, there is a hardware aspect in my Xonar card that would prevent that, which I doubt.

In any case, thanks a lot again for the help. I will try to look into this DDL and DTSC installer, and if I find anything helpful, I will post here again.

Carved: Now that you're on your own site, you should consider putting up a forum so that different discussions can take place in separate threads. It would cut down a lot on the chaos.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been trying different comment systems (like disqus and intensedebate) but they all have they're ups and downs. A forum might be good from some perspectives but there are some issues to consider like: it might fragment the discussions, it will be harder to contribute to the discussions because of the registration and might require more resources that I have available at this hosting plan. Anyway I will certainly investigate and think about this.
In the meantime, I will compact and modularize this page.

You're right, it's probably yet another tradeoff. Some thoughts:

Fragmentation: Most forum software lets you merge threads together, but people are generally pretty good at following a thread-per-issue system. In any case, I can't see it being any worse than the equivalent of one long thread, where discussions tend to get lost once they fall off the current page.

Registration: I already have to log in to WordPress to post as myself. I also have occasional trouble with third-party blog commenting systems when reading blogs from work, due to an annoying corporate firewall. Being able to log in to a first-party hosted forum would be a plus for me. I realize, however, that other people may have an opposing view.

Hey CarvedInside, Wanna give thanx to u for doin this! Really wonderful!
    Quick settings overview:
Asus Xonar Essence STX w/ 1.64 drivers
The "re-enable upmix 2.0 to 5.1 etc" is not enable as per default
    Using the Low-latency driver w/o C-media
Connected via Optical cable via Toslink adapter to a Yamaha HTR-5890
Using Asio driver on Musicbee on FLAC on 24bit 10ms (I also set it on my bit depth to 24 in Windows)

When I installed the driver I had to open Xonar Audio Center to put the output to PCM
    That's it.

Quick questions though as I'm having this "popping" sound...
When playing DTS/Dolby I let my receiver handle the decoders....
When I skip a scene my receiver say Dolby/DTS then very quickly switches to PCM then pops...it's not too frequent but kinda annoying...I just want u to know....

Also, I JUST noticed I'm playing Stereo via SPDIF Pass-thru (by accident) and the sound is more "lifted" than "Speakers" on Default (Via Windows, Playback Devices)
Do u think something is wrong? Should I stay on SPDIF Pass-thru or Speakers? If I want Stereo on, I think I should output in on Speakers, no?

    Thanx for your time! ^_^

I am having a bit of a trouble understanding your comment.
Try setting 16 bit output and 44.1 KHz if you use DTS or Dolby and see if problem persists. There are limitations for the output and sample rate if you use DTS or Dolby but I can't find them at the moment.

I am not sure about SPDIF or Speakers in Windows Volume, probably it better to select SPDIF output.

I want the newest version available! I'm so confused where you found the cmedia drivers, I'm seeing version 8.0.8.1815 ok, fair enough. I head over to station-drivers at http://www.station-drivers.com/page/cmedia.htm and the only things that come close to making sense are 8.0.8.2158 and 8.0.8.1743 but neither seems to match precisely.

Then I look at their homepage http://www.cmedia.com.tw/en/DownloadCenter_Detail2.aspx and see Windows 8 drivers labeled 1.01 or Windows 7 8.17.93 which makes totally no sense. Just tell me this what is the actual version NOW that you're working on and is it really for a CMI8788 chipset>

I have multiple "sources" from where I get the newest audio drivers. Station drivers seemed to gave up on putting up updated versions.
With the release of Win8 drivers Cmedia change the final name of the drivers from 1815 to 1.02 for example, but the actual audio driver files are still .1815 and this number is the relevant one. Right now I am working on a driver with the .1818 at the end (aka 1.05 after the new numbering).
