v1.71 drivers for Essence STX and DX produce an annoying purring sound in the mic when playing TF2 ... only happens in TF2, I've installed the Asus beta STX drivers and the sound has gone.
Is this a known bug with a fix?

Don't know a fix, but you can try with 1.70 drivers instead as they might not have this problem.
Btw, what OS do you have?
Win7 x64.
Okay I'll give 1.70 a try, but im not too keen on installing drivers for this card...
I have a weird problem when installing either the Uni or Asus drivers. When i try to install them the driver installation hangs, forcing me to end the process, then when i try to reboot, Windows hangs trying to shut down so i have to turn my pc off. Then I have to reinstall the drivers at which point it installs instantly and then requests a reboot and does so fine. I don't suppose you have any idea why this always happens?

Strange issue, at this point I don't know why this is happening . You could try doing a driver clean (FAQ Q&A 1), if you haven't done this already.

I tried the 1.70 drivers as did a friend with his card, not sure what his is, but we both still had the noise. He's sent his card back and did a clean install and still have the install problem... it also happened first time i installed so I have no idea what's going on there. I've gone back to the Asus beta driver and once again the noise has vanished.
Maybe you can find out your friends card as well.
If you can, please send me a picture with your settings from the Main and Mixer->Recording tabs from the Asus Audio Center. Tell me the version of ASUS Xonar STX drivers you are using (eg. 1821, 1818). When you've installed the UNi Xonar Settings, have you chosen Xonar STX in the card profile drop-down field?
About the noise, do you hear it too or only others do? And it happens when you press speak or all the time?
I have had a similar install problem with UniXonar 1818,1.70r2. As the progress bar reaches the end, the desktop hangs up and I am forced to use task mgr to close all the windows. I originally attempted to install the Asus ..1794 Driver with no luck, then went back to an earlier restore point before I installed the UniXonar driver. I am using a Asus P8Z77-V Mobrd with Windows 7-Pro,64bit. At this point, I see the driver Ok in device mgr, and there is sound at the analog speaker outputs but I am unable to test the headphone outputs because I have no Control Panel Center. Should I run the cleaner and install the 1818,1.70r2 again or do something different?

Hi, guys. I dont understand, I have speakers 2.1 and I've bought recently xonar dx. Installed official drivers from asus, nothing, no sound, in any of the 5 channels. So then I've red some information that drivers not support 2.1 system and I need to buy additional cabels. So I have tried to download these drivers uni xonar 1.71 as a last resort, from this page. Hence, everything is working 🙂 How it can be ? And another question, how I must configure rightly options to adjust to 2.1 system ? I have plugged the main cable to the 2nd channel from the top so its working, the first one with a light ain't working. In driver meniu options, there are 2 audio channels, but changing it, sounds changes too. So its kinda confusing. In analog out, I have left just primary default 2 speakers. Any ideas ?

Any app for quick switching between Headphones and 2.1 (or any other speaker setup) similar to Front Panel Switcher?
I've developed an app called XonarSwitch that allows to create profiles with different settings and apply them by using the tray icon or global keyboard shortcuts. It works on-the-fly, i.e. doesn't require you to stop playing audio streams in order to apply the new settings, just like the Asus Control Panel but without the DPC latency issues.
I've just sent an e-mail to CarvedInside to see if there is enough interest by this community to start a beta testing maybe through this very site.
Theoretically it supports Win XP and later and Xonar D1/DX, Essence ST/STX, DS/DSX, DG/DGX, Xense. I could support the D2/D2X but I need some info from someone who owns the hardware. I say theoretically because it's reasonably tested on my setup, which is a DX on Win7 x64, but I expect different setups to need some work.

Sounds interesting for sure. If I'm getting this right it would allow me let's say switch sample rate from redbook 44.1KHz to 96Khz used by hi-res audio rips by simple hot-key? BTW I have D2X card. I have never understood why DSX/DS cards have always the new driver released sooner as D2X...D2X is higher spec for sure and I'm just curious.
You could certainly switch sample rate on the fly by hotkey, or change your headphones gain if you say have an Essence STX or a Xense, or activate an equalization profile.
CarvedInside has kindly accepted to host a beta testing on this site so you'll see a post soon with the details to download the beta version and participate in the test.
Right now your sound card is not supported, but merely because I couldn't gather enough information about how the original D2X control panel behaves relatively to various enhancements (Dolby and DTS) when different system speakers and analog output layouts are selected. That's because the D2X is part of the few Xonar models that support extensively both DTS and Dolby, which is something my card (DX) doesn't have.
Technically, I don't expect the driver to require different commands than the other cards, so I should be able to support it if someone like you who owns the hardware is willing to cooperate and provide the info I need. If this assumption is wrong, though, supporting it could prove more complex.
I guess that Asus releases updates DSX/DS and DG/DGX cards first because maybe those cards have sold better, and in their twisted logic they "try" not to upset the majority of owners. Their profits per card should be at least 4 times higher with the D2X than they are with DS/DSX.
May be a silly question, but any ETA on the next release?
No ETA on next release. So far there aren't any new audio drivers available that I can use.
Just FYI, the drivers are working fine on Windows 8.1 RTM (upgraded from Windows 8).
What about the "Dolby Home Theater" add-on? Does it work on W8.1?

No. Standalone application = 1 executable which is used to change 1 specific setting, when you run it, it changes that specific setting.
Great job! Latest driver works fine under Win7, 64 bit with DGX card.
What I am still missing is the opportunity to get sound from the front panel and realpanel simultaniously. Any chance to get this to work somehow?

I am afraid that not possible. From what I understand its actually a hardware limitation.
I know this is a Xonar related site but i want to know Carver opinion on the Creative SoundBlaster ZxR..Creative try with this card to pay their sins..I read some reviews and is pretty audiophile orientated..Is way more expensive than my ST anyway..More than 50%..The Audio market is refreshing very slowly ...
From what I've seen, the cards themselves are pretty good, and the Z series driver support is above Asus Xonar's. While there might not be a clear win, but overall the ZxR would be a better pick.
Personally if I where to pick a new sound card right now, I would go for the creative Z series, but personally I would not buy the high end model and instead go for the Zx or Z as I don't think the $100+ more is worth the investment. If you are thinking of upgrading your card, you should do it only if you are constantly nagged by Xonar driver bugs, as sound quality improvements won't be that evident, if at all.
Maybe sometime in the near feature, Creative will agree to send me a review sample of a Z series card, so I can tell you guys more about the drivers and other stuff that's lightly treated by other reviewers out there.
Because your drivers i have nice experience with the soundcard...In some games i still some weird sounds but i don't mind too much..Anyway you may contact Creative to provide you a sample so you can create a separate section on it..On the other hand they may be not really intersted in this because reviewers//press they got the share and they are not intersted in third party "fixing" their drivers...I have more faith in a third party to provide you a sample than Creative itself...
I think you misunderstood me. I'm not interested in creating modded drivers for Creative cards. I am only interested to review one of those cards especially from drivers and overall experience and compare it to the Asus Xonar experience.
I just don't think Creative is intersted in giving you a card anyway... They already have the press (other review sites as guru3d) that can sustain reviews...

I finally got this driver to work 7.12.8.1796. But in the Xonar audio centre... 5.1 sound is missing in the drop menu... I have Astro A40's for a headset which supports it... Any help?
I'm thinking of getting a Xonar dx... and was wandering if it can do multiple outputs at the same time similar to realtek onboards?
You should mention exactly what are your referring by multiple outputs.
I mean can I listen to music on my speakers connected to the card in the back, while at the same time have my game and voip in my headsets connected on the front panel? thats how I have it setup with my onboard sound card... it needs to create 2 separate outputs in windows playback devices...

You can't do that if you are connecting the speakers to the analog jacks. But it will work if you connect the speakers through S/PDIF.
so I can't separate front panel connectors from the back ones.... ? 🙁 sad.... my onboard can do it but not a dedicated card 🙁

yeah, when I was looking at buying a soundcard I found it surprising that some of them don't have this dual-output feature. Not all onboard soundchips do either but my current MSI board's Realtek 892 chip does.
What my friend who bought the Xonar (on my recommendation) has done is connect his headphones to the Xonar for gaming and the onboard soundcard to his speakers for music. I guess with the quality of most MP3's that people listen to, they hardly need the quality of the Xonar, whilst the games do sound better with it and a decent set of headphones. He's using the Razer virtual surround with it as well now and says it's the first virtual surround he's been impressed with (certainly more so than the Xonar's built-in vSurround).
Hi Carved, on Win8 Pro x64 would you suggest to uninstall the original Asus drivers (1821) I'm using ATM and install your latest Uni? I'm looking for the best audio quality possible. If so, which version of your driver should I install when asked? Notice that I don't like the C-Media panel..I prefer the Asus Xonar Center. I have an Essence ST. Thanks much 🙂
Well it's up to you if you want to install the UNi Xonar drivers or not, feel free to check the UNi Xonar Features page (again). If not for C-Media Panel go for Low DPC latency configuration, and in this case you might want to check the XonarSwitch beta application.
Ok, I installed the latest UNi Xonar Low DPC latency w/ XonarSwitch (very useful app btw) and everything's OK. Only thing is that I liked better the new Xonar Audio Center skin...if you can add the possibility to choose between the two skins in the next UNi that would be nice. Well honestly this is a soundcard not graphics card. The best thing you are after is sound. Forget about the eye candy Xonar Asus panel. I had exactly the same problem, issue as you with the visual look of C-Media panel but then I hit play and smile while I was listening with C-Media. It may look “dry” but the functionality is exactly the same + there are no pointless % in channel volumes but all are in dB. Believe me and get the max from your STX card. I found out that the sound quality of playback for all players/drivers is about the same but what makes the difference is how many “things” is standing between the input signal while it reaches your audio hardware and possibly make it sound worse....
Just a quick comment to say that I installed Windows Server 2012 R2 (as a workstation) on my desktop PC today and the Uni Xonar drivers 1.71 with the C-media panel are working just fine.

Many thanks for providing these. I wanted to bypass all sound processing but soon discovered that I needed Flexbass enabled otherwise my subwoofer (connected through a receiver) would receive no sound during games. I've installed C-media panel to do this, however I note that the 'Environment Size' option is enabled and cannot be turned off. Are you aware if there is a way to disable this or if not, what the setting actually does? No search results have helped - I can only guess it's dynamic range related?
Environment mode only "works"/is applied when you enable a environment profile. Right now it does not do anything on your system. These options are also in the Asus Xonar Audio Panel.
Have you already tried XonarSwitch? The latest revision supports FlexBass and it doesn't enable global reverb or other sound processing, unless you do that explicitly.
