this thread may also help to provide reference photos & data - and combined with Con's descriptions of his mod's - using smt ceramic caps in place of hi-grade electrolytic caps is very useful, I am thinking about possible ways of mounting to mainboard, including small custom pcb daughterboard interface between smt ceramics & mainboard surface tracings using short tinned 22g solid wire conductors (5mm max length)

use of stand alone dedicated "clean" precision power supply module looks increasingly necessary

to comply w/ forum rules pls email me at edward-drood(...) for deleted audio forum address – there are several clear photos of stx mainboard details

I`m not very sure how this discussion about hardware mods of Asus cards can be integrated in this tread on this forum, witch is as usually intend for the software field (driver) for these cards.

Else I feel to make a remark about so called hi-grade electrolytics used on STX cards. They are not at all! They are standard series electrolytics. Is only a legend that this kind of yellows electrolytics are hi-grade.They have hi ESR and hi inductive values as they are build in this classic way. The ceramics has very low ESR, and no any inductive component as they are build up in other way.
On this card, and in the places with relative hi level tension (audio output +/- 15v), one have to use some solid Tantal SMD (no legs) capacitors. Decoupling every op amp circuit power input is a must. These decoupling capacitors have to be solder directly on chips power legs/pins. There is no way to make supplementary PCBs and use long wire connections. The soldering connections have to be made on the card, nearest to the chips and shortest as possible. One have to take in consideration very carefully the ground distribution and GND connections. It must be no loop in this ground connections, and also shortest as possible with a only one GND point (as possible...)!
Specially the connection (traces) between the DAC (PCM1792), the I/V converter and the output op amp, have to be as short as possible. Is not the case on the original Asus design... Personally I remake it the I/V - op amps out stage on a small simple PCB (as mechanical support for the chips), very compact (using for connections between op amps only 0,2 mm silver wire). This PCB was connected to PCM 1792 outputs with the same silver wires and at a 10-15 mm distance. Closed as possible. I have a rule now to use only silver wires in all connections I made in this audio field....Another rules: shortest connections as possible, closed as possible, compact as possible, one point GND as possible, simple/minimal as possible. Another rule: no ferrite bead, and no capacitors to GND on the audio signal. I have only 2x4pF capacitors on this whole analog audio signal out line. There it is necessary to prevent hi frequency osculations on final op amps.

Finally , I just made an observation yesterday: I`ve got at least my new Oppo BDP95. This is the most sophisticated player on this price class today, and it use the most new (new concept) DACs on the marked today (ESS9018). It sound fantastic! But the difference between my now modded Asus STX, and this ultimate player, I have to say that is quite difficult to hear...

thank you, con, v. good suggestions, more "food for thought" before ordering parts

perhaps it is because this is highly specialized software thread, Uni-Drivers can only benefit from appropriate hardware mods, and better to discuss both drivers + hardware mods together to confirm compatibility + improvement in sound "quality".

only other thread i found re: xonar st/stx mods, referred to this thread for up-to-date drivers...

perhaps our host CarvedInside will make his suggestion about this thread...

Personally I do not have any problem to continue about hardware mods here... So, waiting the "boss" last word...

Guys, I believe a dedicated page would be more appropriate. There we could do a index and add guides. So the information would be more accessible for everyone.
This is the page I am talking about. Wish I could move the related comments there.

Unfortunately I can't move the comments, so either you copy paste the relevant ones there or maybe merge them and do a article/guide which I will post.

    Hi there,

I have tried installing the Uni drivers, alas to no effect.

After the complete install, I reboot the pc only to find that the speaker icon in the task bar is red marked and no audio is available whatsoever. I have to reinstall the official Asus drivers to get the sound back.
It really bugs me as I have plenty of issues with my Essence STX under Windows & 64 SP1, cracking noise when trying to make music , etc

Any help with be greatly appreciated.

Did you check "ASIO Patch ? Do not check this option and it should work.
ASIO Patch may not work for Windows Vista/7 x64 (digital signature error).

Great stuff Virus, your tip seems to have done the trick 🙂

No Asio patch and it installed fine. It's a shame because I wish the Asio driver was more refined as it creates so many issues for me when using Reason 5 on w7.
How can such an established company like Asus release such bad drivers for one of it's flagship audio product is beyond me.
Thank you anyway for your help.

Hi, iv'e just tried installing UNi Xonar 1794 v1.41 file.
After installing a box appears stating - Unable to execute file:

    Hi Enoch0o,
Ok done that and no warning boxes. Unfortunately when i try to access the C_Media audio panel or the Xonar audio centre nothing happens.
Ive gone into control panel/device manager/ the ASUS Xonar Essence ST Audio Device
    has a yellow !.
Ive tried updating the driver and it says ive got the latest driver.
Not sure where to go from here.

I guess there is no choice of getting sound out from front panel and back panel at the same time? Such a small thing, but it is absolute must for me :´(

Any chance of getting such option in future versions?

    • Virus04 Aug 2011 @ 13:00

No, because Xonar cards do not have 2 extra channels for front panel, so external out is switched to front.

Is there any hope for getting more then 2 input channels for ASIO on a Xonar DG? I'm trying to run redocnexk (more details below) and it throws some error about there not being enough channels :/

I'm trying to use redocnexk because I want 5.1 audio from games that do not use dolby digital and to my knowledge, the Xonar DG does NOT support Dolby Digital Live.

Hymm, 14 inputs ? No way. Even Xonar D2 does not have 14 audio inputs ! Most Xonar cards have 2 input / 8 output max.

Do you use digital connection to amp? If you have only analog speakers you will not benefit anything for such re-encoding. Also most games use control panel setting or have own configuration to provide surround sound.

I use SPDIF to my 5.1 reciever, that usually only gives me stereo upmix though because of the no Dolby Digital Live thing in games.

        • Virus08 Aug 2011 @ 23:07

Standard SPDIF implementations ale limited to 1536 kbps (ie. 2 sound channels, 16bit at 48KHz). So there is a problem.

Do you tried a 2.05 GUI version of redocnexk (kxencoder) http://rossanodembech.it/public/html/kx.html ?

This app was created for kxdrivers (SoundBlaster alternative drivers) so it may not work well on other cards.

Hmm, i'm trying it now, the app doesn't instant-exit like the older version did, however, no audio is being outputted. Probably a misconfig somewhere, but I'll keep trying to play around with settings

Hi, i have many problems using ASIO with Cubase 32 bit running on a Win7 64 bit system. I believe that the main problem is that ASIO driver comes only for 64 bit system and there is not a 32 bit driver installed. When i use Xonar ASIO with 64 bit apps, it works fine, but it doesn't work when using Cubase 5 32 bit (and when i bring up the ASIO panel, both dropdown boxes are disabled). ¿there is any solution for this issue? ¿how can i get my ASIO working with Cubase?

    Thanks in advance,

Well messing with redocnexk didn't help (couldn't get audio to output at all no matter what). Is there any way I can use 5.1 audio in games using SPDIF, without using Dolby Digital? Can Dolby Digital Live somehow be "emulated" via drivers?

    Warning:
The C-Media Control Panel may be bad for your ears / headphones (!)

Switching between speaker modes, sample rates or toggling effects produces a very loud digital popping sound in the right front speaker that has a possibility to damage your ears or headphones.
There are no such issues with the ASUS Control Panel.

Tested with Xonar DX / D1 soundcards.

Well like I said I managed to get it working by chance, so I don't want to break my desired installation configuration and have to go through the trouble of getting it working again.

If I have trouble again when the next version of Uni Xonar is released, I will definitely try your suggestion.
